Many of you are aware of the disruption caused by the recent movement of mailboxes throughout SLV. You may not be aware that your mailbox was used by emergency personnel to identify your address. Delay in finding your address during the unfortunate event of an emergency could be detrimental.
To improve your safety, a team of concerned residents, Sandy Branch emergency personnel, SLV board members, and staff team members have been collaborating to find a solution. During this process, we learned that McCormick County ordinances have specific criteria for address identification (click here to view the ordinance) with which SLV homes have not been complying. Therefore, the team has developed a solution, approved by SLV Board of Directors, that meets these criteria and, more importantly, improves the likelihood that 911 personnel can readily identify your property.
What does this mean for current homeowners?
If you do not have a mailbox located at the end of your driveway in front of your house, or if your address on the mailbox has become obstructed — or if you just wish to become fully compliant with the County criteria — we are strongly recommending you purchase and install this address marker. This includes homes that have address numbers on their house, garage and/or on yard art or with non-reflective numbers with only one readable side. The purpose of the marker is so emergency personnel can quickly locate your home using a consistent marker, especially at night.
The cost of the marker is $30 which includes the vinyl capped post and reflective numbers. You can purchase an address post with numbers for your home by contacting Community Service at (864) 391-4126. Homeowners may self-install or request Community Services to arrange installation assistance if needed.
To comply with the County criteria and provide maximum safety value, the address marker must be placed in the area indicated in this placement diagram.
Remember new homes will not be issued a certificate of occupancy until the post has been installed. We appreciate your cooperation in this very important initiative.
Should you have questions/concerns, please contact Community Services at (864) 391-4126 for further information.
